Disney's Halloween Costume Ideas

If your looking for something magical this Halloween, I've include some of my favorite Disney costume ideas to showcase at this year's Halloween party. Here's how to get started:

Cinderella Costume

Have you ever read the Brother's Grimm version of this famous folktale? Now there's a disturbing tale that will get you in the mood for the darkest night of the year. Regardless of which version you choose, here's how to put it all together:

• The Dress

At the center of this costume is of course the dress. Unless you want to embody Cinderella before she was sauntering around at the ball (and who does?), you're going to need an beautiful, flowing dress that reflects the attire of a fancy party.

One cheap way to do this is to simply buy a pre-made Cinderella costume. If this would look too inauthentic for you, you might be able to find some nice formal clothes at a thrift store for a reasonable price, then alter it with sequins, glitter, or other shimmering materials to give it that magical look.

• The Shoes

It's unlikely that you have glass slippers laying around, and, besides, they would probably be uncomfortable. Luckily, there are transparent plastic alternatives that you can usually find online.

• The Hair

You can go with the traditional Disney Cinderella up-do or you can go with something that is more in line with the modern trend of depicting heroines a bit more loosely and organically. As far as hair accessories go, this is also optional, but a nice ribbon or even a tiara could look nice.

Even if the original story behind Cinderella is a little creepy, one can't deny that this character is often an elegant and beautiful choice for women young and old. So be Cinderella this Halloween and make all the heads turn at the ball.

Maleficent Costume

If your a fan of Disney's (2014 and 2019) dark fantasy film, "Maleficent" then you might want to consider the Maleficent costume for Halloween. It's a fun costume for females of all ages. Here's how to put it together:

• The Costume

The main piece of clothing that you will need is a polyester black dress with bell sleeves. If you can make it a black christening gown, that is even better. You will also need black sculpted shoulder pads to make your shoulders look more extravagant.

The neckline area just above the chest of the dress or gown should have a black and white spotted brooch. This can be a detachable ornament that you put on your neckline. The horns might be to hard to make from scratch, however it can be purchased at any online Halloween store.

• Additional Elements

The main accessory that will complete the costume is the black staff that Maleficent holds in her hand. This staff is about 56 inches long and contains a blue and green orb on the top. If you can find a staff which has an illuminating orb, then it will be better.

So far, you have the essentials for the Maleficent costume. But there are additions and alterations you can make, depending on the exact look you want. For example, since Maleficent is supposed to be a fairy, you could wear some black wings on the back of your dress.

The footwear should consist of high heeled black leather shoes. For the head, you will need a headband which has two black horns sticking out of it. Either that or you can wear a customized hat which has two horns sticking out. If you don't like a dress that is too wide on the bottom, go with a black skirt instead. Some versions of the costume may mix black and purple together. Try any of those and have fun with it.

Pinocchio Costume

When it comes to Halloween costume ideas, you can't get any more unique than designing a costume dressed like Pinocchio. Here's how to get things started:

• The Outfit

The basis of your Pinocchio costume will be dressed in red shorts and a yellow T-shirt. To make Pinocchio's classic red suspenders, simply get some red cloth and yellow felt. Cut the red cloth into two strips (measuring 'Pinocchio's' shoulders to be sure each strip will reach the shorts in the front and the back). Hot glue the suspender straps to the inside seam of the shorts.

With the yellow felt, cut out two large circles that will be Pinocchio's suspender "buttons" and glue them on the front of the shorts just where the suspenders attach. Tie a thick blue ribbon into a huge bow (you may need a crafty friend to help if you're not a good bow tier) and hot glue it to the front of Pinocchio's shirt.

He'll also need white gloves and a hat. Pinocchio typically has a yellow hat with blue ribbon trim around it, but a small, yellow straw hat will do. Apply black eyeliner around his eyes, as well as blush to Pinocchio's cheeks to give him a puppetry glow.

• The Strings

Most importantly, Pinocchio needs strings. For this, take two dowel rods and glue them together in an X. With a roll of thick string, measure two pieces that will reach from the bottoms of Pinocchio's feet up to a foot or two above his head.

Do the same with two strings that will reach from his wrists to above his head. Glue one end of each string to each end of the X. You can tie the strings to Pinocchio's wrists/ankles, tuck them into his gloves, socks, or simply have them dangle free as your friend (portraying Geppetto) walks around and pretends to guide him.

Genie Costume (From Aladdin)

Genies are powerful beings in Arabic folklore who can grant wishes. Whether the wish they grant is what you wanted, though, depends on the disposition of the genie in question. Thanks to I Dream of Jeanie, the concept of genies, or djinn, entered the western culture and become better known. Disney's Aladdin did a lot to help, too.

• Disney's Interpretation

Disney's 2019s Aladdin did a lot to help, too. Genies are powerful beings in Arabic folklore who can grant wishes. Whether the wish they grant is what you wanted, though, depends on the disposition of the genie in question.

Robin Williams of course portrayed a very affable genie, but they could be cruel and cunning creatures as well. Interestingly, with arrival of Islam, genies remained an important part of local folklore, with good genies generally identified by their faith.

• The Costume

As for a costume, there are a couple different directions you can go with this one. Though painting yourself blue is a bit much, if you want to go for the Aladdin look, some baggy pants and a vest will do the job quite nicely. Feel free to put on a shirt if it's colt out. Genies, in their human form, typically wore what the locals did to obscure their power and not draw attention to themselves. That said, a flashier costume is certainly appropriate as well.

Itty-bitty living space or not, genies could and did wield impressive power, and some felt no qualms about displaying that. to make the costume flashier and more ornate, trim along the colors, stripes, or some shiny bits are perfectly acceptable options. Colors are key, too. Reds and blues are great for the tops, while tans or browns work well for the pants. Vibrant colors can also work to make the outfit match. It's a bold choice, to be sure, but when you're a being of phenomenal cosmic power, some flash is warranted.

• The Accessories

Genie costumes are rather versatile due to their familiarity to western culture. At the core, all you need is some baggy pants and a vest of the appropriate colors. From there, accessories and additions are up the individual.
